Thompson, James

THOMPSON, James (fl. 1873-74), was noted as "...the architect and builder" for the Gothic style church on Simmons Road at WILTON, ONT. for the Wesleyan Methodist Congregation in 1873, and still standing in 2022. Constructed of local blue limestone, it featured 'a tower supported by buttress piers, neatly capped'. It was described as "....a model of neatness and beauty, and is now the finest country church in this part of Canada" (Daily British Whig [Kingston], 5 Feb. 1874, 2, descrip.; Christian Guardian, 18 Feb. 1874, 53, descrip.). The church closed in 1968, and is now owned by the Wilton Women's Institute.
