Abraham, Robert Austin

ABRAHAM, Robert Austin (1886-1958), born in Burlington, Ont. on 10 February 1886 and active in Toronto from 1903 when he joined the firm of Symons & Rae as a draughtsman, presumably to serve an apprenticeship, and remained with them until 1910. He then entered the office of George R. Gouinlock but by 1911 had begun his own practice. His name appears as designer of the Palmerston Apartments, Palmerston Avenue at Herrick Street, 1910, and in 1911 he completed plans for the Tyrrell Building, King Street East at Church Street. Abraham is also credited with the design of a 'theatorium', perhaps the Iola Theatre built for Albert E. Playter on Danforth Avenue near Pape Avenue, 1912, in Toronto. After 1920 he joined Ontario Hydro as a staff architect, but appears to have abandoned the profession by 1928. Abraham died in Toronto in 1958.
