Thetford, Clarence

THETFORD, Clarence (1880- ) was born in Mildmay, Ont. on 20 September 1880 and was educated at public and high schools in Toronto. He does not appear to have obtained any formal education in architecture, but gained most of his talent working as a draftsman in Toronto for Darling & Pearson from 1900 until 1925. He then moved to New York City to join the office of James Gamble Rogers, one of the leading exponents of the Collegiate Gothic style in America. Thetford was a talented draftsman, and frequently entered competitions sponsored by the Canadian Architect & Builder. In 1900 he received first premium for his design of a Suburban Bicycle Club House (C.A.B., xiii, March 1900, 51-2 & plate illus.). In 1902 he was given a prize for his design of a Town or Suburban House (C.A.B., xvi, Feb. 1903, 28-9, descrip.; April 1903, plate illus.). In 1904 he obtained Third Prize for his Beaux-Arts design of a Public Library (C.A.B., xvii, Feb. 1904, 76 and plate illus.). He was still residing in New York City as late as 1941 (inf.
