TEMPLETON, Francis Orr (1904-1972) was born in Glasgow, Scotland and attended the School of Architecture there, graduating in 1927 with the Rutland Prize. Concurrent with his education he articled with Sir John J. Burnet, one of Scotland's leading figures of early modernism, and was appointed his assistant in 1927-29. Templeton emigrated to Canada in 1929 and settled in Montreal where he joined the office of John S. Archibald (in 1929-32), then moved to Ottawa to assist H. Gordon Hughes (in 1934-39) and was invited by him to form a partnership with him in 1939 (see list of works under Hughes & Templeton). After serving with the Royal Canadian Engineers during WWII he joined the office of Archibald & Illsley in Montreal and was later made a partner in the firm.
