Smith, William

SMITH, William (fl. 1860-78) was active in Mitchell, Ont. for more than a decade and may be linked with several works erected in the Perth County area from 1860 onward (Gazetteer & Directory of Perth County, 1867, 99). In 1860 a newspaper in Stratford noted '.....a very beautiful plan of a church drafted by Mr. W. Smith of Logan for the Episcopal body of Mitchell, Ont.' (Stratford Beacon, 22 June 1860, 3; Canadian Ecclesiastical Gazette, 15 Aug. 1862). This local town landmark, now called Trinity Anglican Church, St. Andrew Street at Quebec Street, MITCHELL, ONT., opened on 24 August 1862; still standing in 2023. Smith was still practicing from his office in Mitchell in 1878 (Perth County Gazetteer & Business Directory, 1878-79)
