Smith, Wilfrid F.

SMITH, Wilfrid F. (1886-1947) spent his entire career in Midland, Ont. Born there on 28 September 1886 he was educated as public schools in the town but he had no formal education in architecture. Nothing is known of his early training or apprenticeship, but he may have learned the building trades under his father William Smith, a master carpenter who settled in Midland in 1880. W.F. Smith opened his own office in 1922 and completed several works in Midland and in other towns throughout Simcoe County. His career suffered a setback in 1934 when he was seriously injured in an automobile accident near Elmvale (Const., xxvii, July-Aug. 1934, 114), and only a few commissions can be attributed to him after this time. Smith died in Midland on 3 August 1947 (obit. & port. Free Press-Herald [Midland], 6 Aug. 1947, 11; R.A.I.C. Journal, xxiv, Aug. 1947, 292; inf. Ontario Assoc. of Architects). His youngest brother was the architect Harry P. Smith of Kingston.
