Smith, John V.

SMITH, John V. (1820-1894), a prominent architect in Detroit, Mich., prepared a Gothic design for the Wesleyan Methodist Church, Park Street at Centre Street, CHATHAM, ONT. in 1870 (Christian Guardian [Toronto], 7 Dec., 1870, 192, descrip.; Chatham Weekly Planet, 6 July 1871, 2). He also collaborated with W.G. Malcolmson on the plans for Mount Zion Presbyterian Church in RIDGETOWN, ONT. in 1879 (Globe [Toronto], 29 Jan. 1879, 3, t.c.). Smith was born at Hovingham, Co. Yorkshire, England on 27 September 1820 and emigrated to the United States before 1851. He practised in Detroit for over forty years, and later moved to Saginaw, Michigan where he died on 26 August 1894 (obituary Detroit Free Press, 28 Aug. 1894, 3; obituary Evening Record [Windsor], 3 September 1894, 4)
