Smith, George Neilson

SMITH, George Neilson (1789-1854), a native of Edinburgh, Scotland, was active as an architect, teacher and artist in Saint John, N.B. from c. 1841 to 1854. He held classes in drawing for 'young Mechanics' (New Brunswick Courier [Saint John], 9 Jan. 1847, 3, advert.) and in 1849 prepared a Gothic design for St. David's Presbyterrian Church, SAINT JOHN, N.B., 1849-50, the cornerstone of which was laid on 15 August 1849 (Daily Sun [Saint John], 7 Dec. 1878, 3). The church was destroyed in the Great Fire of June 1877. Smith died in Saint John on 23 January 1854 (death notice Saint John Daily News, 25 Jan. 1854, 5).
