Smith, David

SMITH, David (fl. 1852-55) of Guelph, Ont. prepared a neo-classical design in 1852 for the Grey County Court House, Third Avenue East, OWEN SOUND, ONT. This landmark is still standing in 2023 (Parks Canada, Early Canadian Court Houses, 1983, 219, illus.; M. MacRae & A. Adamson, Cornerstones of Order, 1983, 222, 269, illus.). The experience he gained from this commission proved valuable when, in 1854, he formed a partnership with David Murray, and with him completed the design of the Halton County Court House (see list works under Murray & Smith). Their business relationship was terminated within a year, and no information has been found on Smith after 1855.
