Smaill, James

SMAILL, James (1827-1887), a native of West Lothian, Scotland, practised from an office on North Street in Goderich, Ont. for nearly twenty years (Sutherland's County of Huron Directory, 1869-70, 157). In 1869 the firm of Smaill & Crooke were credited with the design of the Post Office, SEAFORTH, ONT. (Seaforth Expositor, 17 Dec. 1869, 3, descrip.), a classically inspired work which 'presented a very imposing appearance' on the main street of the town. In 1877 Smaill was one of thirty-four entrants who submitted a design in competition for the High School at Stratford, Ont (Stratford Beacon, 5 Oct. 1877, 2). His scheme was not among the finalists and McCaw & Lennox of Toronto were declared winners. Smaill died in Goderich on 23 December 1887.
