Shewbrooks, Samuel Bernard Dean

SHEWBROOKS, Samuel Bernard Dean (1876-1957) was the son of Charles Shewbrooks, architect to the Duke of Devonshire. Samuel attended the Derbyshire Technical School in Chesterfield and gained much valuable experience under his father while engaged on the restoration of Hardwick Hall in 1900-04. He then worked independently, with much of his time spent preparing hotel designs for the Brampton Brewery Co. He emigrated to Canada in 1912 and established a practise in Vancouver, first in partnership with F.A.A. Barrs in 1912-13 (see list of works under Barrs & Shewbrooks) and then under his own name. Much of is work was residential in nature, including a substantial house in the Central Park neighbourhood of Vancouver for Philip Oben. Shewbrooks was elected to the Burnaby Town Council in 1928-30 and died in Vancouver on 26 August 1957 (biog.
