Sadler, Robert

SADLER, Robert (1833-1884) was born in England and practised in Owen Sound, Ontario where he was first listed as a bricklayer and builder (Directory of the County of Grey for 1865-66, 253). By 1869 he began to style himself as an architect (Province of Ontario Gazetteer & Directory, 1869, 370). His most accomplished work is that of the Town Hall & Market, 2nd Avenue East at 8th Street East, Owen Sound, 1868-70; burned 1961. He also drew plans for the Derby Township Hall in nearby Kilsyth, Ont. 1869-70, and for the impressive Gothic design of Christ Church (Anglican), Tara, Ont., built 1877, and still standing today in 2023. Sadler continued to advertise himself as "Architect & Building Engineer" as late as 1882, where he was " ...prepared to furnish Plans and Specifications for all classes of Buildings, whether built of Stone, Brick, Wood or Iron...." and he offered to " ..... furnish detail drawings and give practical directions for carrying out the several works to completion" , and he stated that " ...a liberal discount will be made on Churches, Chapels, Sunday School buildings, etc." (advert. in Owen Sound Times, 29 June 1882, 1). Sadler later died in Owen Sound on 18 February 1884 (death notice in Owen Sound Advertiser, 21 Feb. 1884, 2).
