Wood, George Winks

WOOD, George Winks (1863-1941) was a founding partner of one of Montreal's longest surviving architectural firms. Born in that city, Wood was educated there and at the age of fifteen entered the office of Hutchison & Steele as an assistant in 1877. When Steele returned to Scotland in 1890, Wood continued to work as an assistant to Alex C. Hutchison until 1898 when he was invited to form a partnership with him (see list of works under Hutchison & Wood). J. Melville Miller joined the firm in 1908 but left in 1918, and after the death of A.C. Hutchison in 1922, Wood continued the practise with W.B. Hutchison, son of Alex C. Hutchison. When George W. Wood died in Montreal on 27 September 1941 his practise was continued by his son A. Campbell Wood who remained active until after 1950 (obit. Gazette [Montreal], 29 September 1941, 16; R.A.I.C. Journal, xviii, Dec. 1941, 209). A portrait of George W. Wood can be found in J. A. Cooper, Men of Canada, 1901-02, 149.
