Wolfe, George Morton

WOLFE, George Morton (1885-1966), an architect from Buffalo, N.Y. who specialised in industrial architecture, designed the office and factory for the Frankel Brothers Steel Co., Eastern Avenue at the Don Roadway, TORONTO, ONT., 1913; demol. (Toronto b.p. 3690, 28 April 1913) and a large commercial office block for the Continental Life Insurance Co., Bay Street at Richmond Street West, TORONTO, ONT., 1914, demol. c. 1960. In 1933 he prepared plans for a large summer residence at BAY BEACH, ONT., for George J. Weckerle of Buffalo (C.R., xlvii, 8 March 1933, 256). Wolfe was born in Middletown, Conn. on 18 May 1885 and graduated from the High School in Hartford, Conn. in 1905. He opened an office in Buffalo c. 1910; his best known works there include the eclectic design for the Circle Theatre, Bailey Avenue near 16th Street (1914) and Art Deco design of the Amherst Theatre, Main Street at Springville Avenue (1941-42). Wolfe died in Buffalo on 1 March 1966. A lengthy illustrated essay on his work, including a photographic portrait of the architect, with illustrations of his Toronto buildings, was published in the journal called The Ohio Architect, Engineer & Builder [Cleveland], xxviii, Aug. 1916, 9-29.
