Wilson, George Everett

WILSON, George Everett (1909-2000) was born in Montreal on 26 December 1909 and graduated from the School of Architecture at McGill University in 1934. He formed a partnership with George E. Auld in 1935 and remained active in Montreal until 1940. Wilson joined the Royal Canadian Air Force later that year and served with Canadian Forces in Europe for which he was awarded an O.B.E. (R.A.I.C. Journal, xxi, Sept. 1944, 218). Upon his return to Canada he moved to Toronto and opened an office in 1947 in partnership with Frank D. Newton. He was elected President of the Ontario Assoc. of Architects in 1958. The Canadian Architectural Collection at McGill University holds a collection of sketch books, drawings and photographs donated by Wilson and relating to his work in Montreal and in the province of Quebec. EOMPETITIONS

TORONTO, ONT., Toronto City Hall, 1958. The Toronto firm of Wilson & Newton were one of nearly 100 Canadian entrants in this international competition. The modernist design submitted by this firm was not among the finalists, but their proposal has recently been published in G.T. Kapelos, Competing Modernisms: Toronto's New City Hall and Square, 2015, 70, illus. The competition was won by Viljo Revell from Finland.
