Wilson, Clifford St. John

WILSON, Clifford St. John (1888-1978) of Halifax, N.S. was known primarily as a civil engineer in that city, a profession in which he had been educated at the School of Engineering at McGill University in Montreal. In 1920 he formed a partnership in Halifax after 1925 with Harry B. Pickings and the firm of Pickings & Wilson, Civil Engineers, continued to practise until 1932 when the scope of their office work was broadened to include architectural services and well as engineering work. After the dissolution of the firm in 1937 Wilson began to practise both architecture and engineering under his own name. He possessed a specialized knowledge of reinforced concrete construction and often assisted Andrew R. Cobb with the structural design of important commercial and institutional buildings in the Halifax area. He retired in 1952 and died at Wolfville, N.S. on 27 March 1978. A photographic portrait of Wilson can be found at the Nova Scotia Association of Architects office in Halifax (obituary in the Chronicle-Herald [Halifax], 28 March 1978, 34; obituary The Gazette [Montreal], 29 March 1978, 26; biography in M.
