White, William P.

WHITE, William P. (1862 -1932) was active in Seattle, Wash. from 1902 to about 1918, and he designed several landmarks there including the Jefferson Apartments (1905), the Kinnear Apartments (1907-08) and the Astor Hotel (1909). In Vancouver, B.C. he capitalized on the same formula of efficient multi-storey apartment blocks and designed nearly a dozen variants in the downtown area, including his best known project, The Sylvia Apartments (later called the Sylvia Hotel), Vancouver, B.C., 1911-12. No information can be found on his activity in Canada after 1914. He remained active in Seattle until 1918, then moved to Bremerton, Wash. where he was employed as a draftsman in the Navy Shipyards. He died there on 5 April 1932 (biog. in J.K. Ochsner, Shaping Seattle Architecture, 2014, 484; D. Luxton, Building the West: The Early Architects of British Columbia, 2003, 486, 523).
