White, Alexander

WHITE, Alexander (c. 1830-1909) of Woodstock, Ont. practised there for over forty years. Born in Scotland he came to Canada before 1870 and likely trained under his father David White with whom he was later in practice in the firm of David White Sr. and Alexander White, Architects (Woodstock Sentinel, 17 March 1871, 2, advert.). After the death of his father in 1880 he continued to work there under his own name. He was one of the founding members of the Ontario Assoc. of Architects and attended their first convention in 1889. White died in Woodstock on 9 June 1909 (obit. Contract Record [Toronto], xxiii, 23 June 1909, 34). His eldest son Murray A. White was a partner in the Toronto firm of Burke, Horwood & White, and his youngest son Melville P. White trained with that firm, but chose not to pursue a career in the profession.
