Wheeler, Charles William

WHEELER, Charles William(1863-1937), one of three sons of Charles W. Wheeler, was born in England on 30 June 1863 and was brought to Canada in 1882. He worked as an assistant in the Winnipeg office of his father but by 1900 he had moved to Port Arthur, Ont. where he began to practise under his own name. His skill as a designer never matched that of his father; his largest work, that for the Finnish Labour Temple (1909-10) was an awkward and unrefined attempt at interpreting the Queen Anne style. Few references to his work can be found after 1914; he died in Port Arthur on 22 December 1937 (obit. News Chronicle [Port Arthur], 23 Dec. 1937, 3; Daily Times Journal [Fort William], 24 Dec. 1937, 3; inf. R. Rostecki, Winnipeg)
