Wheeler, Arthur Wakefield

WHEELER, Arthur Wakefield (1872-1960), one of three sons of Charles W. Wheeler, all of whom were persuaded by their father to take up the profession and train in his Winnipeg office. Arthur W. was born in Birmingham, Engl. on 18 June 1872 and articled with his father from 1894 to 1902. He joined the Canadian Northern Railway in Winnipeg as chief draftsman in 1902, working under the direct supervision of the Chief Architect Ralph Pratt. In March 1907 he moved to Edmonton to join the Provincial Public Works Dept. as an assistant to A.M. Jeffers and to supervise the construction of the new provincial parliament buildings, designed by Jeffers (Winnipeg Tribune, 13 March 1907, 9). By 1913 he was listed as 'Assistant City Architect' in Edmonton, and prepared specifications for (and may have designed) the City Market Building, First Street, EDMONTON, ALTA. (Edmonton Capital, 15 Sept. 1913, 7; 17 Sept. 1913, 5). No references to his activity after 1914 have been found. He died in Toronto on 9 March 1960 (R.I.B.A., Directory of British Architects 1834-1914, 2001, ii, 965)
