Weeks, Richard

WEEKS, Richard (c. 1860 -c. 1910) was active in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island as an architect, builder and contractor from 1871. His name first appears in 1860 when he was recorded as a carpenter in Stratford, P.E.I., neaer Charlottetown, and it may be presumed that he was trained in the building trades. In 1873 he was appointed Superintendent of Public Works for Queen's County and in this position he supervised the design and construction of provincial buildings as well as wharves and bridges. This included a standard plan which he prepared for six Circuit Court Houses, erected to supplement the three larger County Court Houses in Prince County, Queen's County and King's County. A detailed description of this prototype, designed by Weeks and erected in the village of Bonshaw, was published in the Daily Examiner [Charlottetown], 13 March 1876, page 3.

Weeks held this post until October 1876, and he was succeeded by Charles McGregor. He then resumed practise as an architect, offering to design structures "....of the most modern and approved style of Architecture" [Daily Examiner [Charlottetown], 9 Oct. 1876, 2). At this time, he was said to have possessed more than twenty-five years' experience in the United States and Canada. After 1881 Weeks left Canada and moved first to Colorado then to San Francisco where, for nearly twenty years, he engaged in the contracting and building business. He died there in 1909 or 1910. His son was William H. Weeks, a well-known architect in San Francisco (biog. inf. The Patriot [Charlottetown], 6 July 1911, 5; inf. Harry Holman, Charlottetown).
