Walker, Rankin & Walker

WALKER, RANKIN & WALKER (fl. 1855-56), were active in Quebec City. The firm consisted of W.H. Rankin, listed variously as an architect or as a civil engineer in local directories for the period (Quebec Business Directory, 1854, 96; Quebec Directory, 1855, 145), but the names of the both Walkers (perhaps brothers) are absent from the alphabetical listings in these sources. In March 1856 they were one of fourteen firms from Canada and United States who entered the competition for the Custom House at Quebec, but the two schemes which they submitted were not premiated (NAC RG 11, Vol. 90, File No. 3, 'Schedule of Competitors for the Proposed Quebec Custom House', 25 March 1856). The winning scheme was prepared by William Thomas.

In April 1856 they submitted a Neoclassical design in the competition for the Quebec District Jail at Quebec City. The original watercolour perspective of their proposal, signed 'Walker, Rankin & Walker' survives in the Picture Collection of the National Archives of Canada (NAC, Picture Coll. C 104985). The federal Department of Public Works took nearly four years to consider the proposals before declaring Robert Messer as the winner.
