Panter, Charles W.

PANTER, Charles W. (1839-1867), a native of New Brunswick and son of John Panter (1824- 1891) who was a prominent master builder in southern Nova Scotia. Charles learned the building trades under his father, but in April 1860 he became a naturalized citizen of the United States, and established his own business in Brookline, Massachusetts at the young age of 21 years. Within four years, he had moved back to Canada and opened an office in Yarmouth, N.S. (Nova Scotia Directory, 1864-65, p. 701). In that town, he offered to “….furnish plans, Specifications and working drawings for all types of buildings – public & private, and also for Bridges and Landscape Gardening. Special attention paid to the arrangement and furnishing of school houses “. His most important work in Nova Scotia was the Second Empire design for Yarmouth Academy, at Yarmouth, N.S. (1863-64). His promising career ended suddenly on 2 June 1867 in Naples, Italy where he was said to have travelled “…..while pursuing his studies in Rome“.
