Woodall, Samuel Cole

WOODALL, Samuel Cole (1860- c. 1893), a young and ambitious architect active in the Pacific Northwest region of the USA and Canada. Born in Dudley, England, he emigrated to the United States in May 1884 and was living and working in Portland, Oregon in 1889 where he was recorded as a draughtsman for the Irish-born architect William F. McCaw (City of Portland Directory, 1889, 578). He moved to Seattle, Wash. in 1890, but by late 1891 he had relocated to Victoria, B.C. and was noted as the architect of The Adelphi Block, Yates Street at Government Street, 1892; demol. 1948. Woodall was last recorded in Seattle in December 1892 when he returned to England (Seattle Post-Intelligencer, 13 Dec. 1892, 4).

BELLINGHAM, WASH., The Whatcom County Court House, 1890. Woodall formed a partnership with George W. Dornbach of Seattle in early 1890, and their office was one of 20 architects who sent in plans for this large public building (Seattle Post-Intelligencer,26 Jan. 1890, 8). It is unclear who won the competition.
