Barnes, Edward William

BARNES, Edward William (1881-1956) was recorded as an architect and architectural draftsman in Montreal West from 1909 until 1941, and he appears to have worked under his own name, and as a staff architect with Ross & MacDonald, and later with the J.A. Holland & Son Co. in Montreal. Born in Penselwood, Co. Somerset, England in October 1881, he was brought to Canada by his family in 1890 and was educated and trained in Montreal. He began his career as early as 1909 and his last recorded work was completed in 1941. His name was listed in 1912 as an architectural designer, rather than as an architect (City of Montreal Directory, 1911-12, p. 751). Yet his name cannot be found in the Membership rolls of the Province of Quebec Association of Architects, and it is unclear if he attempted to become a member, preferring instead to operate outside the rules of the Association. His last work appears to be that of an Electricity Demonstration House in Cartierville, Que. in 1936. Barnes died at Montreal West on 6 July 1956 (death notice Montreal Daily Star, 7 July 1956, 19; death notice Montreal Gazette, 9 July 1956, 41; inf. Yves Guillet, St. Lambert)
