Leibert, John Grant

LEIBERT, John Grant (1887-1949), active in Vancouver, B.C. where he was in partnership with Hugh Braunton, as Braunton & Leibert, Architects. Their firm was remarkably successful, and more than 20 projects have been credited to the firm during the period of 1912-14. Leibert was born in San Francisco, Calif. on 1 Sept. 1887, but no information has been found on his education and training. He arrived in Canada before 1912 and collaborated with Braunton until early 1914 when a downturn in the local economy forced them to relocate to Seattle. In early 1916 both partners moved their office to El Paso, Texas and their firm prospered, but after 1920 their partnership was dissolved, and Leibert moved to Marin County, near San Francisco, but he appears to have abandoned his career as an architect, choosing instead to become a contractor and builder. Leibert died in San Francisco on 24 May 1949 (obituary San Francisco Examiner, 26 May 1949, 19).
