Kertland, Sidney William

KERTLAND, Sidney William (1896-1965) was the younger brother of Douglas Kertland (1888-1982), and he may have been persuaded to take up the study of architecture in Toronto after he had arrived here from England in 1910. Sidney was born in London on 11 April 1896 and attended high school there. After emigrating to Canada, he took courses in architecture at the Toronto Technical School, then enrolled in evening courses in architecture at the Univ. of Toronto in 1912-14. During this period, he was employed as a draftsman in the office of Darling & Pearson (in 1912-14), and after WW1 he worked for the City of Toronto architectural department (in 1920-22), and as draftsman for William L. Somerville (in 1922-26), and as a draftsman and site supervisor for his older brother Douglas Kertland (in 1926 to 1931). In 1936 he submitted an entry in the national competition for new house designs, sponsored by the Dominion Housing Act, and his entry, No. 197, in a conservative American Colonial style, was published in the compilation of designs (Dominion Housing Act Competition, 1936, p.42, illus.). Kertland later died in Toronto in 1965 (inf. Ontario Assoc. of Architects).
