Flack, Horatio Charles

FLACK, Horatio Charles (1872-1950), active in Regina, Sask. where he was in partnership with Emile Delay from 1921 to 1924 and together they operated an office under the name of The Architecture Studio. Flack was born in London, England on 9 January 1872 and he was the son of Charles H. Flack, an architect who lived and worked in London from 1881 onward. Horatio C. articled in his fathers office from 1889 to 1894, then spent the next eleven years as manager and chief assistant to his father from 1894 to 1905. Horatio C. operated his own office in London from 1905 to 1913, then emigrated to Canada.

He settled in Regina and was employed as a designer and draftsman in the office of the Provincial Dept. of Public Works, working under the direct supervision of Maurice Sharon. It was there that he met another staff member Emile Delay, a talented French architect who had been educated and trained in Paris. Together, they opened an office in Regina called The Architecture Studio (1921-1924), but after the dissolution of their business in 1924, Flack continued to live and work in Regina, and from 1927 to 1939 he worked as a collaborator and assistant to F.H. Portnall. He appears to have retired from the profession after 1939, and later died in Regina on 21 November 1951 (obituary Regina Leader-Post, 22 Nov. 1950, 18; inf.
