Dumfries, Frederick

DUMFRIES, Frederick (1871-1941), a British-born architect who arrived in Montreal, Quebec in 1907 and practiced there for the duration of his career. Born in Brighton, England on 13 September 1871, he was educated in public schools as well as in art schools there, and later articled with a leading architect in Brighton. He moved to Shanghai where he worked as an architect for four years, and spent three years in Johannesburg, South Africa in the profession. He also served with British Forces during the Boxer Rebellion in Shanghai, China, and during the Boer War in South Africa before emigrating to Canada.
Many of his commissions in Montreal were for local branches of the Montreal City & District Savings Bank, and he may have served as their staff architect for more than a decade.
