Waggett, Stanley Arnold Palmer

WAGGETT, Stanley Arnold Palmer (1882-c. 1963) was active in Toronto, Ont. from 1909 to 1922, and he specialized in residential work, much of it of a speculative nature, erected during the boom in building construction in Toronto before WW1. Born in Brighton, England in January 1882, he was educated and trained in England and emigrated to Canada in May 1907, landing at Montreal. He moved to Toronto in 1908 to work as a clerk for the Dominion of Canada Guarantee & Accident Insurance Co, but by 1909 he was listing himself as an architect. His name was recorded as "architect" on several building permit applications from 1910 to 1912. His name continues to appear in the yearly Toronto Directories until 1922, but by 1923 he had moved to Ford City, Ont., a suburb of Windsor, Ont., and he was commuting across the border to Detroit where he was employed as a draftsman and assistant in the office of Smith, Hinchman & Grylls. After 1930 he returned to the Toronto area and in 1932 he was recorded as a draftsman in The City of Toronto Architect's Department (City of Toronto Directory, 1932, p. 1601). From 1934 to 1938 he was listed as an architect, but by 1940 he was recorded as president of Waggett Aero Products, a manufacturer of aircraft parts and boats. After WWII, he was working as a draftsman for the Odeon Theatre chain, and by 1950 he had taken another position, this time as a draftsman with the Toronto Board of Education (City of Toronto Directory, 1950, p. 1610). His name last appears in the City of Toronto Directory of 1963, living at a residence on Brunswick Avenue. No references to his building designs after 1920 have been found.
