Suess, Henry Daniel

SUESS, Henry Daniel (1854-1912), an American-born house builder and carpenter who emigrated to the Niagara Peninsula in southern Ontario in 1877. He lived in Humberstone, Welland and in 1891 was recorded as a “house builder & carpenter”, but by 1901 he was noted as an architect, and appears to have worked as a professional for at least 10 years. Born in Buffalo, N.Y. on 31 January 1854, he may have trained in the building trades before coming to Canada. His major project in Niagara Falls, Ont. was the design of the Sunday School for St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Queen Street at St. Clair Avenue, NIAGARA FALLS, ONT., 1906; demol. 1962 (Daily Standard [St. Catharines], 23 April 1906, 5, detailed architectural descrip.). In 1907, he was briefly in partnership with William Nichols of Niagara Falls. Suess died in Niagara Falls, Ont. on 8 January 1912 (burial records, Fairview Cemetery, Niagara Falls, Ont.).
