Waterson, John

WATERSON John (1864-1934), active in Vancouver, B.C. from 1909 to 1912 where he was in partnership with Kennerly Bryan (see list of works under Bryan & Waterson). Born in London, England in1864, he articled to his father in 1880-85, then worked in the office of H. Stopes in 1885-89. He moved to Durban, South Africa in 1889 where he was assistant to W.F. Roberts in 1889-92, then opened an office in Johannesburg in 1892, and was later in partnership there with Charles R. Snell (in 1892 to 1898), and with H.G. Veale from 1898 onward. He was a member of the Royal Inst. of British Architects, and was elected as a Fellow of the R.I.B.A. in December 1906. It is unclear why he left a seemingly successful career in South Africa in 1907 and decided to move to Vancouver, B.C. where he worked for about 4 years, but left in 1912. Waterson died on 11 May 1934 (obit. R.I.B.A. Journal [London], xli, 13 Oct. 1934, 1070; biog. Saturday Sunset [Vancouver], 25 Sept. 1909, 20; biog.
