Broughton, Thomas

BROUGHTON, Thomas (1816-1895), of Brantford, Ontario, best known as a builder and contractor, but also recorded as an architect from c. 1870 to 1890. He was born in Barnoldswick, Co. Yorkshire, England in 1816 and emigrated to Canada in 1843. He was, for many years, the superintendent of the Grand River Navigation Co., and in 1870 he was noted as “the stonemason” who built, and may have designed, St. Jude's Anglican Church, Peel Street, BRANTFORD, ONT., 1870, and he also constructed the additions to the workshop of Thomas Tutt, Colborne Street, BRANTFORD, ONT., 1870 (Brantford Expositor, 11 Nov. 1870). His major ecclesiastical work in the area was the design of the Baptist Church, GALT, ONT. (1886-87).
