Hodgson, Herbert

HODGSON, Herbert (1857-1927) was recorded as an architect in Victoria,, B.C. from his arrival there in 1913 until 1923 when he left for Los Angeles, Calif. He was born in Queensbury West, Co. Yorkshire on 3 June 1857 and he trained in the office of John Drake of Queensbury for five years, and worked there for another three years as assistant to Drake. He joined the Royal Inst. of British Architects in June 1888. Hodgson later worked in Bradford, England from 1883 until after 1910. then made a curious mid-career decision at the age of 56 years to sever his connections in England and move to British Columbia in 1913. A detailed biography of Hodgson was published shortly after his arrival in the Daily Colonist [Victoria], 21 Sept. 1913, Sunday Magazine Section, p. 3. He remained there for the next decade and continued to work as an architect, but left Canada in 1923 and moved to California.
