Pringle, Alexander

PRINGLE, Alexander (1864-1928), engineer and architect of Montreal, Que. was the son of Thomas Pringle, a well-known Canadian engineer who lived and worked in that city in the late 19th C. When Thomas retired in 1898, his successor was his son Alexander, and after the death of Thomas P. in 1911, the firm retained the original name of T. Pringle & Son and continued to design and oversee many landmarks of industrial architecture throughout eastern Canada. Alex Pringle was born in Montreal on 9 July 1864 and was educated at Bishop's College in Lennoxville, Que.. In 1883 he moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin and trained with E.P. Allis, mill and engine builders, until 1889 when he returned to Montreal. When his father retired, Alex continued to work in the field of industrial architecture, retaining a staff of engineers and architects including Pierre Helbronner and E. Carlyle Miller and others.
