Saxton, David Francis

SAXTON, David Francis (1889-1962), active in Halifax, Nova Scotia, was a member of the Saxton family of builders who began work in the mid-19th. C. He was trained in the building trades, and went to the United States in 1909 to receive his education and architectural training. He returned in 1913 and later opened his own office in Halifax in 1920. However, by 1927 he had closed his office, choosing instead to join the staff of Charles A.D. Fowler, architect, yet the works which he completed during this period of 1928-30 are credited to Saxton, an indication that he, and not Fowler, prepared designs for these buildings. He later joined the N.S. Dept. of Highways & Public Works, and became a member of the Nova Scotia Society of Architects in 1941. Saxton retired in 1959 and later died in Halifax on 21 January 1962 (obituary Halifax Chronicle Herald, 22 Jan. 1962; obit. R.A.I.C. Journal, biog. M.
