Henderson, Dougald

HENDERSON, Dougald (1844-1910) lived and worked in Truro, Nova Scotia for more than twenty years, and appears to be the only resident architect to serve the town and surrounding Colchester County during the period after 1890. Born at River John, N.S. in 1844, he learned the building trades in the town of Old Barns, and was said to have also engaged in ship building. By 1890 he began to style himself as an architect, serving clients in Truro and in nearby towns, and his works included commissions for ecclesiastical, institutional and residential works. He continued to work in Truro up until late 1910. Henderson died in Truro on 20 September 1910 (obituary Truro Daily News, 20 Sept. 1910, 4; biog. M. Rosinski, Architects of Nova Scotia: A Biographical Dictionary, 1994, 206)
