Kennedy, William Newman

KENNEDY, William Newman (1873-1936) of Montreal, Que. served as Assistant Chief Architect for the Canadian National Railway Co., and worked directly under the supervision of John Schofield, Chief Architect. Kennedy was born in Fenlon Falls, Ont. on 26 April 1873 and was brought to Winnipeg, Man. by his family in 1882. He joined the Engineering Dept. of the Canadian Pacific Railway abour 1900, and rose to the position of chief draftsman in their Winnipeg office, but retired in 1912. Three years later, in 1915, he joined the rival C.N.R. in Montreal when they had formed an Architectural Department, and later became Assistant Chief Architect. During his tenure, he designed important buildings for the railway including depots, freight buildings, roundhouses and hotels. He was also a member of the Royal Architectural Inst. of Canada, and the Manitoba Assoc. of Architects. Kennedy died at Winnipeg, Man. on 18 Sept. 1936 (obit.
