Kennedy, William

KENNEDY, William (1822- 1897), active in Montreal, Quebec where he taught classes in architectural drawing and design at the Montreal Mechanics Institute. Born in Montreal in 1822, he was educated there, and on leaving school he learned the trade of builder and contractor, and also studied architectural drawing, enabling him to design works on his own accord, and to act as builder for these projects. In 1842 he entered into a partnership with his father, and carried on business with him, combining with it the profession of architect, valuator and expert. His title and profession is confirmed by listings in City of Montreal Directories from 1884 to 1897. Only one major work there can be attributed to him, the extensive 4 storey publishing office and warehouse of the famous John Lovell & Sons Ltd., the company that produced the valuable annual city directories for the City of Montreal, now used as a key resource for research on citizens and buildings in the greater Montreal area. A biography and portrait of Kennedy was published in Rev. J.D. Borthwick, Montreal: It's History, 1875, 84 and 84A. Kennedy died in Montreal on 18 October 1897 (obituary Montreal Daily Star, 19 Oct. 1897, 10).
