Feustmann, Maurice Mayer

FEUSTMANN, Maurice Mayer (1870-1943), architect of New York City and Saranac Lake, N.Y., and in partnership with William H. Scopes (see entry and list of works under Scopes, William H.). Born in Philadelphia, Penn. on 13 November 1870, he was educated at the University of Pennsylvania, and later studied in Munich, Germany and at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. He came to Saranac Lake, N.Y. in the late 1890's seeking treatment for tuberculosis. It was coincidental that another patient who was also being treated there was W.H. Scopes (1877-1964). Both architects learned of their mutual interest in architecture, and later became business partners in the New York City firm of Scopes & Feustmann in 1903. They specialized in the design of hospitals and sanatorium buildings located in Canada as well as in Vermont, New York, Connecticut and Minnesota. Their practise remained active until 1933. Feustmann later died at Saranac Lake, N.Y. on 25 August 1943 (obituary New York Times, 28 Aug. 1943, 11; biog. H. Withey, Biographical Dictionary of American Architects, 1956, 209).
