Tischart, Louis P.

TISCHART, Louis P. (1859-1929), an obscure architect who was recorded as the designer of St. Ignatius Roman Catholic Church and adjacent Roman Catholic School, Cathcart Street at Huron Street, SAULT STE. MARIE, ONT., in 1902-03. He reputedly “....drew up the plans” for this Gothic work, and the church opened in February 1903 (Sault Star, 7 August, 1902, 6, descrip.; and 23 Oct. 1902, 1; and 26 Feb. 1903, 8, descrip.). In 1911 he was recorded as the architect for a two storey commercial block on Queen Street, between Elgin Street and Bruce Street for W. O'Brien, and located "....next to the Sault Star Building" (Sault Star, 4 May 1911, 1). No other references to his work in Ontario have been located, but he is almost certainly the same “ Louis P. Tischart, Architect” who was recorded living and working in St. Catharines, Ontario in 1921 (inf. Canada Census – 1921 – Ontario – St. Catharines). He was born in Carrick, Bruce County, Ontario on 29 January 1859, and may have received his architectural training in Chicago, Ill. before moving to Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario after 1890. H worked as an architect in that city for at least 10 years. He later died in St. Catharines, Ont. on 30 June 1929.
