Langley, Frederick William

LANGLEY, Frederick William (1872-1935), born and raised in Toronto, Ont. and he was the son of Henry Langley, a leading architect in that city in the mid-to-late 19th C. Frederick W. was born there on 26 December 1872 and received his university education in that city. His father was almost certainly influential in persuading his son to pursue the study architecture at the School of Practical Science at the University of Toronto in 1891-92, and Frederick W. likely received his early architectural training in his father's office. However, unlike his older brother Charles Langley, Frederick chose to leave Canada after 1892 and develop his career as a professional architect in Chicago, Cleveland and in Detroit. He later returned to Toronto after 1930 and died there on 19 September 1935 (obituary New York Times, 21 Sept. 1935, 15; obit. The Telegram [Toronto], 20 Sept. 1935, 3; biog. in Who's Who in American Art, Vol. 1, 1936-37).
