Goddard, Walter John

GODDARD, Walter John (1888-1918), active in Saskatoon, Sask. where he trained under Robert M. Thompson. Born in London, England on 8 January 1888, he articled for 3 years with T.M. Garrood, a prominent architect in that city. and remained as his assistant for the next 1 ½ years before joining the office of Professor F.M. Simpson, FRIBA. Goddard arrived in Canada before 1912, and was one of the first young architects in Saskatoon to join the new Saskatchewan Association of Architects in 1912 (S.A.A., Membership No. 19, dated 21 February 1912). Goddard spent the next four years as chief draftsman in the office of Robert M. Thompson, but when Thompson enlisted in the Canadian Army in November 1915, Goddard was appointed as the successor to Thompson, and it may be presumed that any commissions by that office from early 1916 to 1918 were from the hand of Goddard, not Thompson (Saskatoon Daily Star, 4 April 1916, 15, advert.)

Goddard later joined the British Army in France in 1918, but was killed in action there near Arras on 2 October 1918, just one month before the ceasefire of November 1918. He was buried at Duisans British Cemetery in Etron, France (inf. U.K., Commonwealth War Graves Commission, 1914-1921; inf. Saskatchewan Assoc. of Architects, membership Application No. 19).
