Mateer, John Albert

MATEER, John Albert (1863-1952) of Vancouver B.C. appears to have devoted much of his career to projects for which he acted as a building contractor. However, in 1894 he was described as the “architect” of several projects in Cumberland, B.C., and it is likely that additional research will. uncover commissions for which he served as architect, or as architect and builder. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1863 and arrived in Vancouver after 1884. He retired from the construction business in 1928, and died at Burnaby, B.C. on 5 November 1952 (obituary and port. Province [Vancouver], 6 Nov. 1952, p. 37; obit. Vancouver Sun, 6 Nov. 1952, 37).
