Hooper, John Simpson

HOOPER, John Simpson (1875-1940), son of Samuel Hooper, was born in London, Ont. on 24 April 1875 and likely trained under his father in Winnipeg, Man. When his father was appointed as Provincial Architect for Manitoba in June 1904, John S. opened his own office in Winnipeg in partnership with Charles H. Walker, as Hooper & Walker, Architects. When his father died in October 1911 John S. continued his father's practice, at first under the former name of Hooper & Hooper, and in 1913-14 in partnership with William T. Davis. During WWI he supervised the family marble business and later took a position with the Building Dept. of the City of Winnipeg. In 1922 he applied to renew his membership in the Manitoba Assoc. of Architects, but no references to his work from this period have been found. In 1939 he was active in Edmonton supervising the construction of the new T. Eaton Co. Department Store block for the Winnipeg firm of Northwood & Chivers (inf. Manitoba Assoc. of Architects). Hooper died at Red Deer, Alberta on 7 August 1940 (obit. Winnipeg Daily Tribune, 8 Aug. 1940, 3; Free Press [Winnipeg], 9 Aug. 1940, 2; obit. Red Deer Advocate, 14 Aug. 1940, 7).
