Schneider, Walter W.

SCHNEIDER, Walter W. (1868-1965), a successful architect in South Bend, Indiana, USA who can be linked to works in the Essex County area of western Ontario. Born in Chattanooga, Tenn. on 28 June 1868, he moved to South Bend, Indiana in 1896 and opened his own office as an architect there 1901. He may have spent summer vacations at Pelee Island in Lake Erie, and thus received commissions from residents in the area of Harrow, Ont. In South Bend, his best-known works include the Natatorium (1922), the Knights of Pythias Hall, the River Park Theatre, Westminster Presbyterian Church, and churches in Mishawaka, Austin, Hammond, Gary and South Bend. He retired in 1957 and later died in Duluth, Minn. on 12 June 1965 at the age of 96 years (obituary South Bend Tribune, 14 June 1965, 25).
