Dickenson, W.

DICKENSON, W. (fl. 1880-84) was described as “the architect” for a substantial ecclesiastical landmark in the town of HEART'S CONTENT, NEWFOUNDLAND in 1881. His design for St. Mary's Anglican Church was an extensive wood frame structure in a Gothic style, overlooking Trinity Bay, and measured 128 ft. x 90 ft., and nearly 70 ft. in height. Begun in June 1881, the church stood until 1989 when it totally destroyed by an arsonist. A detailed architectural description of the church, with credit to the architect W. Dickenson, was published in the Evening Telegram [St. John's], 27 July 1851, 1 & 4, descrip., and in the Harbour Grace Standard, 6 Aug. 1881, 2. The church was almost complete by June 1883 when the interiors, designed by Dickenson, were described (Harbour Grace Standard, 9 June 1883, 2, descrip.) No biographical information on W. Dickenson has been found.
