Henniker, Robert Cowtan

HENNIKER, Robert Cowtan (1809-1871) was recorded in Quebec City in the period of 1835 to 1838 where he was partnership with Frederick Hacker (see list of works under Hacker & Henniker). Born Chislet, Co. Kent in England in early 1809, he was baptised there on 23 April 1809, but no information has been found on his early education or training. He arrived in Lower Canada after 1830, and he may have served an apprenticeship with Frederick Hacker in Quebec. Their formal business partnership was signed on 14 September 1835 (ANQ, greffe of Louis Panet, No. 6706) and they remained in business until 1838. Henniker returned to England after 1840, but he appears to have abandoned the profession; his name later appears in the City of London Directory as an insurance agent. He died in London, England on 7 July 1871 (inf. A.J.H. Richardson, Quebec City: Architects, Artisans and Builders, 1984, 301-02, list of works by Hacker & Henniker). Robert C. Henniker should not be confused with the London architect Richard W. Heneker, active there from 1844 to 1855, and who later moved to Montreal, Que.
