Fleming, Hamilton

FLEMING, Hamilton (fl. 1845-50) was recorded as an architect in St. John's, Newfoundland where he received First Premium in the competition for the Market House in that city in 1846. He was awarded a prize of L 15.00 Sterling for his effort, but weeks later, the Great Fire of 9 June 1846 swept the city, and his winning proposal was shelved, and later replaced by an inferior plan built in 1847 (Morning Courier [St. John's], 6 Oct. 1847, 2). Fleming was still active in St. John's in 1850 where he was “....thankful of past favours, and begs to remind the public that he continues to give plans and specifications for any description of Buildings, on the most reasonable terms......” (Public Ledger [St. John's], 29 Jan. 1850, 4, advert.).
