Hyslop, Fred Kirkpatrick

HYSLOP, Fred Kirkpatrick (1888-1979), a prominent architect in Toronto, Ont. best known for his landmark Tudor Revival design of the Windsor Arms Hotel, St. Thomas Street at Sultan Street (1927-28). Originally conceived as an apartment house, this 94 suite block was later converted into a hotel and a fashionable restaurant called Three Small Rooms (designed by Janis Kravis, architect). However, the entire block was radically altered in 1996 when the original hotel building was demolished, and a replica pastiche was erected on the site to resemble the original hotel, but now dominated by a 13 storey condominium tower placed in the centre of the old courtyard.

Hyslop was born in Toronto, Ont. on 1 May 1888 and attended the University of Toronto from 1905 to 1909. During this period, he articled in the office of Beaumont Jarvis, a leading architect in Toronto, from 1905 to 1910, then worked as a junior draftsman in the architectural department of the Toronto Board of Education in 1910-12. From late 1912 to 1916 he was employed as a draftsman in the office of the City Architect of Toronto, then went overseas in 1916-19 and worked in engineering offices. After returning to Toronto in 1919, he joined Yolles & Rotenberg, an architectural and engineering firm, and remained with them until 1922 when he opened an office under his own name. After WWII, Hyslop had fully embraced the modernist style, best seen is his striking design for the retail headquarters of Jaeger House Ltd., Yonge Street (1948; demol.) where he designed the entire store including fixtures and fittings, dominated by an open two-storey portal with large glazed windows displaying products of this British fashion company. Hyslop retired after 1950 and later died in Toronto on 28 October 1979 (inf. Ontario Assoc. of Architects; inf. Leslie J. Upton, Mississauga)
